An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented welding and joining specialist to join the manufacturing laboratory of the ITP Aero facility at our Hucknall site in Nottingham.

The joining processes involved to manufacture components in the Hucknall facility range from conventional fusion welding processes including TIG, EBW, LBW and RSW to vacuum brazing and diffusion bonding. Such processes are utilised on different materials widely utilised in the aero-engine industry.The site has recently added a £1.2 million Laser Beam Welder to the assets portfolio.

This is a unique opportunity for a welding engineer or any enthusiastic individual with a strong interest in welding, willing to utilise and expand their knowledge and expertise in the joining and welding field.

In 2021 the Rolls-Royce Hucknall facility, the manufacturing plant and associated commodity, including fabrications design engineering and supply chain management, is to transfer into ITP Aero ownership. This will increase the scope of ITP Aero’s product and skills portfolio, reinforcing its position as a leading global tier 1 supplier in the aerospace market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Control and develop welding and joining processes required to support manufacture of components, assisting the operations team to assure the achievement of the production schedule.
  • Conduct investigations to modify and improve existing or new joining methods, techniques and procedures, documenting finding in detailed technical reports.
  • Evaluate new developments in the welding and joining field for possible application to current production problems or for reductions in production costs, supporting lean manufacturing.
  • Work closely with other departments to help develop method of manufacture for new products, troubleshoot welding and joining problems, making recommendations, driving improvements and implementing corrective actions.
  • Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques and materials, supporting the selection, justification, acquisition and commissioning of new processing equipment.
  • Approve process data cards/procedures, process or stage drawings and Methods of Manufacture both for domestically manufactured parts and for parts manufactured in the external supply network.
  • Ensure that engineering specifications are satisfied for new products and ongoing manufacture.
  • Ensure process compliance to National and International Standards through both the generation of shop floor instructions and the participation in audit procedures and maintain operator training and qualification requirements for welding processes to ISO24394 including identification of changes to specification requirements that require subsequent operator training.
  • Ensure that the site is NADCAP compliant, accredited in the required timescales and that maintains any existing approvals.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Qualified Engineer (UK MEng or other national equivalent) and/or has deep knowledge of joining and welding procedures.
  • Pragmatic decision making ability, with the drive to resolve issues which arise.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Data driven approach to problem solving.
  • Understanding of company quality management system and proactive process control procedures.
