Lumentum has an opportunity for a PIC Design Engineer to join our Chip R&D team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design and verify advanced photonic integrated circuits and devices, specifically semiconductor laser, modulator and receiver devices, to enable the rapid and successful completion of chip NPI programmes. The role is based at our Northamptonshire offices.


The PIC Design Engineer will be developing world-leading optical components for use in ultra-high data rate systems for cloud data centre, 5G mobile and coherent telecommunications optical fibre networks. You will need to work closely with other members of the laser, modulator and receiver design teams, as well as with members of the wider chip R&D community, the product engineering, test, reliability and process architect teams. You must be proactive and be able to work independently and under general supervision.


  • Product development of new and improved photonic devices and photonic integrated circuits (PICs), for coherent detection and direct detection systems above 100 Gb/s.
  • Development of photonic III-V semiconductor device technologies, design methodologies, fabrication techniques and systems applications
  • PIC device design & modelling (optical waveguides, semiconductor materials and physics, RF, and others); experimental characterisation and performance investigation; statistical data analysis; failure mode investigation


Essential Skills:

  • Strong background in physics, electronic/electrical engineering or a related discipline
  • Specific relevant areas of previous experience include semiconductor materials and devices, semiconductor lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA), optical modulators, photonic integrated circuits (PIC), PIC design software, microwave/millimeter-wave RF, and 10/40/100G circuitry.
  • Optoelectronic component/wafer processing (essential)
  • Ability to use scientific and engineering reasoning in a wide range of situations including statistical data analysis
  • Innovation and ability to drive change in a manufacturing environment to improve product performance
