Position Summary:

Responsible for setting vision, mission and strategy for multiple strategic functional areas of EMEA Legal (Operations, Commercial, Contracts, etc.). Collaborates and directs regional and global activities related to Legal consultation for corporate functions as well as other functional areas of responsibility (Compliance, HR, Litigation, Import/Export, tariffs., etc.). Primary Legal Executive for understanding UK and EMEA political issues that impact and require legal work and discretion. Handles complex internal and external issues for Illumina working independently with the General Counsel, Executive internal stakeholders and outside counsel.


  • Department strategy: Responsible for Legal strategic roadmap for a yearly and 2-5 year vision, strategic and operational plans. Evaluates strategic options; sets execution plan; and is accountable to measure, account for and report results related to business impact. Oversee standardized Corporate legal protocols, obligations and risks. Establishes company position on Corporate legal policies and communicates positioning internally and externally. Responsible for legal policies and procedures needed by the region independently and assures consistency with global Corporate policies.
  • Leadership : Creates and maintains a positive leadership image, providing strategic direction, positioning, and effective communication/partnering to a team of legal professionals. Acts as a foundational member of the regional GM’s leadership team and as a risk sharing partner with Finance and HR.
  • Business Partnering: Acts as strategic key point of Legal advisory services for Commercial and Corporate Functions, exercising significant influence with executive leaders. Serves as the internal legal expert for the region, but also external expert and representative of the Company by maintaining influential outside contacts with top-tier law firms, legal experts, vendors and governing boards. Advising on regional conflicts of interest with a full understanding of our customer base.
  • Legal Consultation: Provides legal counsel to the highest regional executive levels regarding best practices, strategic advisement with respect to mitigating risk and to legal matters for Illumina, including claims and litigation. Provides strategic direction on legal counsel to all other levels.
  • Finance/Human Resources Consultation: Provides strategic direction to Finance and Human Resources Executive leadership in the region to aid in strategic decision-making and mitigation of risk.
  • Contracts and Agreements: Oversees contracts and negotiates terms and conditions, as well as management over all tender offers with customers in EMEA ensuring the team's effective and efficient interaction with our Sales, Marketing, Channel Partner, and Customer Solutions teams
  • Government Investigations: Assists in or leads major investigations, such as government investigations and related reporting, local government claims. Provides strategic planning and direction to team on all other investigations.
  • Providing timely, actionable and practical legal guidance to our Commercial, Finance, Manufacturing, HR, and other Company teams that operate in a competitive and fast-pace environment, with responsibility for continuing to grow with the Company and regional authority moving from headquarters to the region.
  • Assists or provides training on commercial contracts issues and compliance matters (such as anti-bribery and HCP practice) to members of the Sales and Customer Solutions organizations, and distributors;
  • Selecting and managing outside counsel hired to assist on legal matters in EMEA;
  • Acting as a trusted legal partner to the EMEA General Manager;
  • Manage legal support in relation to device registrations in EMEA, e.g., GDPR, IVDR directive and other regulatory matters
  • Providing support to the Headquarters-based Legal Department, located in San Diego, for structuring strategic alliances and other technology transfer relationships, and EMEA corporate organizational matters;
  • Leads a team of more than 10 people, including experienced management-level attorneys

  • Significant experience in Legal and leadership roles
  • Current license to practice law in the UK/EU
  • Experience in a biotech or life sciences company strongly preferred
  • Knowledge and skills typically acquired through previous positions in vibrant global commercial environments involving similar responsibilities
  • Executive presence, and experience interacting with senior internal and external personnel
  • Experience in exercising good judgment in selecting methods and evaluating criteria for obtaining actionable practical solutions and business-oriented results
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective business partner
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Law degree (JD or equivalent) and satisfaction of requirements for professional practice in the UK and EMEA
