Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented pharmacy technician wishing to gain a breadth of experience as a Principal Technician in Education and Training in a high performing Foundation Trust. With the vision, insight and self-motivation to lead the pharmacy department in the delivery of service excellence, you will be joining the team at an exciting time as we look to embed recent changes and further transform our ways of working.

The position requires you to manage and work in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacy Technicians and Lead Pharmacists to manage the overall education and training of the Pharmacy Department. You will be responsible for planning and developing the Education and Training services within the pharmacy team. You will be liaising with colleagues, patients and service users to implement changes for improvements, reporting to the Principal Pharmacist: Lead for Workforce Development, Formulary, & Systems.

You will be organising, facilitating and delivering the effective training and development of the pharmacy workforce, working closely with the Clinical Pharmacy Manager, Principal Technician for Medicines Management and Pharmacy Operations Manager. Your role will require participation working in each service area to validate and assure the quality of training given and ensure competency assessments reflect current practice, networking with service managers.

There is a Trust-wide commitment for implementing digital technologies to optimise patient safety and streamline communication at the interface with primary care. The pharmacy has an automated dispensing unit which is due to be replaced next year and has fully rolled electronic prescribing (EPMA) across the Trust.

Part of your work will involve visiting wards to provide education to healthcare professionals requiring development and knowledge on the safe use of medicines. You are expected to liaise with the team of Principal Technicians and Senior Pharmacists in delivering effective pharmacy services addressing service user’s needs.

Your role is to ensure our services are aligned to pharmacy objectives outlined in the pharmacy strategy and the Trust’s vision. You must have effective communication skills and work collaboratively with all staff groups internal and external. Your role includes the management of staff within Trust Policies and recruitment of staff including workforce planning.

The Pharmacy department is using automation and information technology for continuing its innovation to support all pharmacy services. You will need to be able to collect and present data, meet key performance indicators and carry out audits for improvements. Your role includes promoting the highest standards of professional practice, incorporating the education facilities available to develop staff to their potential to deliver excellent care.

To carry out this role you must have a management qualification. You must also have the BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy services and NVQ level 3 in pharmacy services, or recognised equivalent qualification. You must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Practicing Technician and have current CPD records. You must be an accredited practicing accuracy checking technician to be able to support this role. It is desired that you are an A1 NVQ Assessor or equivalent in Pharmacy Services to manage and support pharmacy students during their training.

The successful applicant will be working closely with the Principal Pharmacist: Lead for Workforce Development, Formulary, & Systems, and in their absence be accountable to the Pharmacy Management Team on the delivery of services.

It is essential that you have current knowledge and significant experience for all aspects of pharmacy working in the dispensary, wards, aseptic services, clinical trials, procurement and distribution, to meet professional standards for training and supporting Pre-Registration Pharmacists, Technicians and Pharmacy Assistants. You must be good with time management to ensure you can deal with the day to day activities and challenges. You must be flexible in adapting your training style and skills to meet the needs of trainees. You must be familiar with the new approach in the training of Pharmacy Technicians through the apprenticeship framework.

Working a late night on weekdays up to 6pm for late shift. Working Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday on a rotational basis.
