Rolls-Royce has got an exciting opportunity for a Manufacturing Engineer to join our Manufacturing Engineering team in Derby.

The successful candidate will join the Precision Machining Facility (PMF) Manufacturing Engineering CI / NPI Parts team and will be responsible for the method development and validation activities on their part(s) within the facility. The PMF is a high-volume machining facility, manufacturing a wide variety of single crystal turbine blades. As well as significant rate increases, the PMF is undergoing significant change in terms of investment in new equipment, acquisition of new capabilities and increasing our flexibility.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated and have technical responsibility for production support of their part as well as Safety, Quality, Cost and Delivery (SQCD) improvements associated with their part(s) and the wider facility. This can include yield improvement activities on the Drive to Zero Defects (DZD), validation of new tooling for business continuity and rate purposes, PPAP and support to the Operations teams on the shop floor. Where required, you will act as Product Introduction (PI) Component Lead, integrating the manufacturing engineering activities across the complete value stream as the primary Manufacturing Engineering representative within the core IPT for their owned part(s). Work in line with the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and implement the Production Product Approval Process (PPAP) for all applicable projects.

The PMF has several high-profile parts and therefore the success of the CI / NPI Parts Team has a direct impact on the PMF business performance and Rolls-Royce. Key Accountabilities:

  • HSE - Ensure that manufacturing processes are in full compliance to Health, Safety & Environmental Standards and meet the expectations of the Zero Harm programme. Including improving the process to reduce all risks as low as reasonably possible.
  • Product Safety - Ensure that manufacturing processes can achieve and sustain the design intent.
  • Quality - Operate a culture of zero defects within the organisation and specifically your process. Works with all functions at all levels to improve yield, drive product right first time and reduce risks. Ensure compliance to all relevant company, legislative and technical policies and standards including Rolls-Royce Management System (RRMS) and Export Control and Intellectual Property requirements.
  • Requirements - Develop manufacturing methods and technology to deliver New Part Introduction to quality, cost and timescale targets. Creating the manufacturing process to introduce new parts into the PMF as well as accountable for their part specific DZD, yield improvement and DPU milestone plans.
  • Technical Communication – Create and maintain elements of the Technical Package (manufacturing instructions, programs, tooling) which clearly define the manufacturing process and control them which effectively communicate the manufacturing process to shop floor personnel.
  • Collaboration - Work with interfacing teams (Research & Technology, Design, Plant Teams, etc.), partners and suppliers to ensure technical aspects of manufacturing processes are understood and accounted for as well as driving technical resolution
  • Digital – Drive the modernisation of manufacturing process to fully utilise data and capitalise on new digital systems.

Key Skills, Experience, Qualifications:

  • Professionally Qualified Engineer (e.g. UK minimum HND/foundation degree or other national equivalent) or equivalent experience.
  • Recognised national or international engineering accreditation (e.g. UK Eng or CEng) is desirable.
  • Highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills and the drive to deliver within a fast pace, challenging, high volume production environment.
  • Practical experience in manufacturing engineering within a production facility including delivery of improvement projects.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes specifically machining processes
  • Practical knowledge and application of lean manufacturing methods including six sigma tools, PFMEAs, control plans and KPIVs/KPOVs.
  • Previous experience of product lifecycle management and traceability is desirable but not required
